Being on the road for two months would've been fine for Nicole. She was a hard cookie and knew her way around people well enough. However, the situation she found herself in now was something she never wanted to experience the fear and constant paranoia. But for her daughter's sake she had to stay on high alert. Jamie wasn't really one to stray from saying hello to strangers and she was still getting used to being told no. Driving down the country roads she listened to the CD in her radio. Jace Williams was one of her favorite country singers, one she had wished to see in concert, but being a teen mom hadn't left much room for spending money selfishly. [break][break]
Stopping her truck she looked back at her daughter's sleeping form in the back seat. A soft smile touched her lips as she felt terrible for how her life was turning out to be. Seeing her father killed, and the rest of her friends she was so unsure of if they were fine or dead. Nicole wished she could take her away from all this, from all the pain and fear, the rejection for her own safety. Her hand gently laid on Jamie's knee and shook her small frame some. A soft groan left her lips and Nicole gave a quiet chuckle. "Baby girl, I need you to get up. You know the drill and mama is low on gas." [break][break]
Slowly Jamie rubbed her eyes and sat up. "Back in the camper?" Jamie asked with a yawn. "Yeah, go sleep in the bed. Don't forget to lock the door." "Just in case of bad people." Jamie continued. "That's my trooper." Nicole placed her hand on Jamie's cheek and rubbed her thumb against the soft flesh there. "Alright let's go." Both girls lept from the truck and Jamie swiftly moved to the camper locking the door behind her as Nicole went and grabbed the empty gas can from the back along with the long plastic tubing. She needed to siphon some gas from these abandoned trucks. Taking in her surroundings she didn't see any movement except a few crows pecking at decaying flesh.[break][break]
Making her way through she found a few good trucks, and she was starting to get a little used to the terrible taste of diesel gas. Getting the tank full she was happy with her progress and walked back to her truck only to find someone had driven up while she was gone. Moving behind an over turned car she placed the gas can down and pulled out her gun. Checking the chamber she switched the safety off and peeked over. Her heart began to race as adrenaline raced through her. She noticed one of the men moving to the campers door. Jamie knew Nicole had her own key and hearing the knocking she could see the blinds open as she peered out. She wasn't that far away, but Nicole had never had to use her gun against anyone before. It was a nerve racking thought to have to possibly kill someone for survival.[break][break]
Taking a deep breath she aimed the gun and pulled the trigger, hitting the one by the camper in the knee. He fell to the ground with a scream of pain and gripping at his now bleeding body part. The other man raced over to his friend and started cursing as Nicole ducked back down. "Get the hell away from my truck!" She yelled out and stayed hidden. The man looked around for the face that matched the voice, but he couldn't. "Finders keepers, whoever the hell you are! We ain't sharing our find!" Giving a deep frown she peered from her hiding spot to quickly duck back as the man raised his gun and started firing at random. Nicole bit her lip as she felt a bullet graze her leg, and another embedded into her shoulder as it passed through the thin metal of the car. [break][break]
"Fuck." She whimpered out and turned away. The blood seeped from her wounds and she turned back. "Last fucking warning! Leave the camper and truck alone, or your ass is grass dickhead!" Taking a deep breath she tried to keep her pain in the back of her mind, but the tears still fell. "Please if there's a God out there... please send me some help or strength or whatever the hell you can send." She prayed as her chest heaved. Turning back around she aimed and pulled the trigger, missing the man's foot by just a few inches making him flinch back.
